About Emergency (2024), under kangana’s direction
Produced by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films, “Emergency” is a high-budget film that portrays a significant event in the history of Indian democracy. The makers’ official statement highlights, “At the heart of this narrative is one of the most dynamic leaders ever, the first female Prime Minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi.” The film stars notable actors such as Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, and the late Satish Kaushik. Ritesh Shah wrote the screenplay and dialogues. “Emergency” focuses on the life of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, with Kangana Ranaut portraying the titular role. This film also marks Kangana’s debut as a solo director.
Kangana Ranaut reacts to film release delay: ‘Meri film pe hi Emergency lag gayi hai’
“An Emergency has been declared on my film as well. This situation is extremely disheartening. I am, indeed, profoundly disappointed with my country and the prevailing circumstances,” Kangana stated.
Kangana contended that she is being targeted even though the events depicted in her movie have been covered in films such as Madhur Bhandarkar’s 2017 political thriller ‘Indu Sarkar’ (about the imposition of the 1975 Emergency) and Meghna Gulzar’s ‘Sam Bahadur’ (on the 1971 India-Pakistan War) from the previous year. She noted that her film had already received certification from the CBFC, but the certificate was rescinded following a review due to numerous petitions.
Kangana says she’ll go to court if needed ahead of her movie release
Kangana stated that such setbacks will not deter her from producing the films she believes in. “Otherwise, we’ll continue to narrate those absurd stories. Today one person scares us, tomorrow another. We are constantly intimidated because we succumb to fear so readily. How long can we live in fear? I’ve created this film with immense dignity, which is why the CBFC has no grounds for objection. They have delayed my certificate, yet I am resolved to release the film in its entirety. I am prepared to take legal action and release the film without cuts. It’s not possible to suddenly depict that Indira Gandhi passed away naturally at her home. It cannot be portrayed in that manner,” Kangana elaborated in Hindi.
The film “Emergency” has been mired in controversy for a while. It has faced backlash from various Sikh groups and has yet to receive approval from the CBFC, indicating challenges ahead of its release. Produced by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films, “Emergency” is set during a turbulent political era in India and aims to depict historical events.
