Taiwan was struck by a massive earthquake on, April 3, 2024, at 8 a.m this morning Taiwan’s biggest earthquake in at least 25 years killed nine people on Wednesday and injured more than 900, while 50 workers travelling in minibuses to a hotel in a national park were missing. Some of the buildings got tilted at precarious angles in the mountainous, sparsely populated county of Hualien place in Taiwan, near the epicenter of the 7.2 magnitude quake, which struck just offshore at about 8 a.m. (0000 GMT) and triggered massive landslides.

Strong Earthquake Hit Taiwan:
A strong earthquake that hit Taiwan on Wednesday and measured magnitude 7.4, is according to the United States Geological Survey, was the strongest to hit the island in about past 25 years.
The city’s mayor, Hsu Chen-Wei, said all residents and businesses in buildings that were in a dangerous state had been evacuated. Demolition work was beginning on four buildings, the mayor said. The power of the quake was captured live as news anchors delivered their bulletins, steadying themselves against giant screens as their sets swayed and lighting rigs rocked back and forth overhead.
The earthquake hit at a depth of 15.5 km (9.6 miles), as people were headed for work and school, setting off a tsunami warning for southern Japan and the Philippines that was later lifted.
Indian Taipei Association has requested to follow advisories issued by the local authorities and also issued a helpline for assistance to all Indians living in Taiwan. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) sounded alarms after detecting a preliminary magnitude 7.5 earthquake near Taiwan, shallow enough to significantly impact the ocean’s surface and potentially trigger devastating tsunami waves. The first of these waves, measuring 30 cm, made landfall on Yonaguni Island at 9:18 am (0018 GMT), confirming fears and emphasizing the urgency of the advisory. Japan has issued an evacuation advisory for coastal areas of Okinawa following a potent earthquake that also affected Taiwan, bringing with it the threat of tsunamis reaching up to three meters in height. Meanwhile, Taiwanese authorities say 70 miners are trapped in 2 coal mines after a powerful earthquake rocked the island.
